The Day family have farmed at Redbourne in North Lincolnshire for over 75 years. We grow a wide variety of arable crops, aiming to produce food of the highest quality.
The Day family have been growing top quality Lincolnshire potatoes for over 50 years. Based in and around the picturesque village of Redbourne in the county of Lincolnshire we strive to grow our potatoes to the highest standards. The potatoes are distributed via a network of merchants and this allows them to be offered in a selection of outlets throughout England.
These outlets range from our large supermarket customers through to traditional vegetable markets in London, Liverpool and Manchester. We are also proud to be able to offer our potatoes to a number of local outlets such as pubs, chip shops, garden centres and local village shops.
The potatoes are grown on limestone soil on the Redbourne land. This is an excellent soil which gives the potatoes a bright colour and a distinctive reddish tint.
One of our most important crops that we grow is wheat. The wheat is planted in the autumn months and is not harvested until the summer.
Most of the wheat that we grow is for human consumption and is sold to millers to make bread, biscuits or cereals. We do also grow varieties of wheat which are used for feed for animals or can be processed for making bioethanol.
The two types of barley which we grow are either planted in the autumn or in the spring. Both are harvested in early summer. We choose to grow varieties of barley that can be used for malting. Our customers, the Maltsters use the barley to create a malt product which is then brewed to make beer or distilled to create spirits.
A crop that is very easy to distinguish once it flowers is the oilseed rape that we grow. The brilliantly bright yellow fields are easy to spot amongst the usual greenery. It has a multitude of uses predominately animal feed, vegetable oil for human consumption or biodiesel. Recently there has been an upsurge in cold pressed rapeseed oil which is emerging as a direct competitor to Extra Virgin Olive Oil. (Cold-pressed means the rape is simply mechanically squeezed to get the oil out of the seeds)
We grow Sugar Beet on a contract with British Sugar.
Beet is planted in February or March and is harvested from September right through to the following February. Altogether we currently supply around 16,000 tonnes a year to the British Sugar Factory at Newark. (This is the equivalent of approximately 3 million bags (1kg) of sugar!)
The Newark factory opens for intake in September and closes in March.
