VAT deferral new payment scheme opens

The new scheme lets businesses pay deferred VAT payments due in interest-free instalments. The earlier a business joins, the more months they can spread their payments across.

Businesses will need to opt-in to the VAT Deferral New Payment Scheme. They can do this via the online service that opens on 23 February and closes on 21 June 2021.

Self Assessment taxpayers will not be charged a 5% late payment penalty if they pay their tax or set up a payment plan by 1 April 2021.

Taxpayers can spread the cost of their tax bill into monthly instalments until January 2022.

Four-step End of Lockdown Roadmap announced

On Monday 22nd February 2021, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced the government’s roadmap to ending lockdown.

Step 1 starts on 8th March and includes all schools and further education reopening, including after-school clubs and sports. You may meet one person from another household in an outdoor setting, and every care home resident may nominate 1 person to visit on a regular basis.

Part two of Step 1 is from 29th March and the rule of six will return for outdoor activities including in people’s personal gardens and outdoor sports facilities will be able to reopen.

Step 2 will be no earlier than 12 April and includes reopening of non-essential businesses, outdoor pubs and restaurants with no curfew or ‘substantial meal’ requirement.

Step 3 is no earlier than 17th May and includes outdoor restrictions lifted to a limit of 30 people, and the rule of six will be applied indoors, including hospitality.

Step 4 is no earlier than 21st June and includes the lifting of all social restrictions, allowing weddings and large events such as concerts to take place.
